H.S. roundup: Miller's late goal gives Red Hook semifinal berth

 

Hudson Miller scored off a pass from Michy Mialma with a minute left in regulation to lift the third-seeded Red Hook High School boys soccer team over sixth-seeded Saugerties, 1-0, in the Section 9 Class A quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Ryan Hobson made four saves in the shutout.

"Hudson scored on a counter off a heads-up play from freshman Michy Mialma," Red Hook coach Steve Sutton said in a statement. "Saugerties is a very good team that played well, but we were tough and kept pushing until we got Hudson free for the winner."

The Raiders (9-6-1) visit No. 2 Cornwall at 2 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Newburgh 2, Franklin D. Roosevelt 1 — Brandon Gracias scored off a pass from Nazere Doughlas in the 57th minute as fifth-seeded Roosevelt lost to No. 4 Newburgh in Section 9 Class AA quarterfinals.

Ryan Diehl made six saves for the Presidents (11-3).

Matteo Russo's goal had given Newburgh a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute.

"We kept good possession of the ball throughout the game and were able to create numerous chances but couldn't find a winner after a few free kicks and scrambles in front of the net in the final few minutes," Roosevelt coach Dan Hoffay said in a statement. "Hats off to (Newburgh)."

Goshen 3, New Paltz 0 — Wesley Mize had five saves in the loss as fourth-seeded New Paltz lost to No. 5 Goshen in the Section 9 Class A quarterfinals. The Huguenots finished their season at 6-8-2.

Wallkill 5, Poughkeepsie 0 — John Locicero scored two goals and assisted on another as top-seeded Wallkill (13-4) eliminated No. 8 Poughkeepsie (7-8) in the Section 9 Class A quarterfinals.

Faith Christian Academy 3, Torrington (Connecticut) 3 — Chris Zhang, Linje Ge and Dalton Louis each scored for visiting FCA. Manny Cabral made 10 saves and had two assists for the Falcons (5-7-3). Torrington tied the score with 30 seconds left in regulation.

Volleyball

Vanessa Jacobs had 15 digs and two aces to lead visiting Our Lady of Lourdes in a 25-14, 26-24, 21-25, 25-14 win over Peekskill late Monday.

Ceara Giametta added 19 assists and four aces for the Warriors (16-1), who clinched a share of the Section 1 Conference 2 League E title with Hendrick Hudson.

Arlington 3, Roy C. Ketcham 0 — Michaela Sciacca had three aces and 10 assists and Kirsten Econom had four aces, a kill and seven digs for host Arlington in a 25-6, 25-18, 25-12 win late Monday.

Kristen Kops added six aces and six digs and Grace Torino had 10 digs and four kills for the Admirals (9-7).

Ailine Cespedes had two aces and three kills for Ketcham.

Field hockey

Fourth-seeded North Salem eliminated vising fifth-seed Pawling, 1-0, in the Section 1 Class C semifinals on a Kaitlyn Thayer goal. Pawling finished the season 8-6-2.

"We didn't play as well as we could have and we didn't capitalize on some crosses in the circle," Tigers coach June Lagan said. "We had a number of injuries this season and it was tough to get our flow going because we were missing players so often. But the outlook for next year is positive. We only had two seniors, so it's a strong group of returners."
