  About Mr. Nagelhout

I am passionate about teaching, mathematics, and helping children and adolescents learn and grow.  I was a Senior Engineer in Design Automation at IBM when I left to pursue this passion. I earned my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University at Albany to become a teacher.

I believe that each student can excel in mathematics. As a teacher, I will adapt my lessons so that each student will have the opportunity to learn and truly understand mathematics. I believe as a teacher I must do all I can to help each student achieve the maximum amount of understanding. I do not believe in giving up on a student; I never have and I never will. I have worked with adolescents with disabilities and a variety of problems, and have found that if I believe in them and support them, they can achieve amazing results! I am definitely an optimist about each student succeeding in life; I am a realist and know that not all will, but I choose to strive to make each one as successful as they can be!

As an experienced engineer, I bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to the education environment. I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering. I have used my passion and skill for mathematics in my 31 year career, and can relate my vast work experience to the world of mathematics for my students. I hold a U.S. patent for a unique database technique that combines spreadsheets and databases and an IBM corporate award for developing a high speed analysis program that can analyze an entire mainframe computer in less than 1% of the time that other programs can.

I also have 30 years of teaching experience in the corporate environment. I have developed, written and taught 15 courses, adapting them for students with a variety of technical and cultural backgrounds. I have developed and used technology in new and exciting ways, including eEducation, to educate students around the world. I have trained and evaluated a team of engineers in the art of teaching as I grew our education mission in IBM. I also have been a manager and served as a team leader for 80 engineers, so I have developed excellent project and people management skills.

I have worked with youth for most of my adult life. For 12 years, I was the head counselor for a scouting program with 40 boys. For 14 years, I have taught students in grades 5 through 8 about careers in engineering. Since 1992 I have taught 100 children for one week each summer, using drama and interactive learning. For the past 16 years, I have led a team that works with teenage boys in prison. Over the last 9 years, I have been the director of Discovery Place, a weekly program for children. I have received the President’s Volunteer Service Award each year since 2005 for the many hours of service each year; the majority of that time for youth oriented programs.

I also have comprehensive computer and technology skills. I am highly skilled in many Windows and Linux programs, and have substantial experience in web page design and wiki creation. I enjoy finding new ways to use technology to enhance learning.

I am confident that my combination of experience and a solid educational background has prepared me for making a positive difference in each student's education and life. I am looking forward to teaching each one of my students!
